The Gallery
Golden Gate Point, Florida

The Gallery is a two-story residence on Golden Gate Point in downtown Sarasota, overlooking Sarasota Bay and the Ringling Causeway. The owner was clear from the start that he didn’t want the coastal look common in Gulf Coast condominiums. Working closely with him, Designs by Human developed a layered, low-key maximalist interior built around contrast in pattern, texture, scale, and shape, with the art collection as the organizing idea. See the full write-up in Sarasota Magazine.

Walls were treated as a design surface rather than a backdrop. The main living spaces are wrapped in a handmade, textured silk wallcovering, treated to resist fingerprints, chosen to catch the light coming off the water in a way flat paint cannot. In the bedrooms, a broad-stroke hand-painted wallpaper reads as artwork in its own right, and another uses a mother of pearl ground that shows through a cream top layer. Where the walls are bold, the furnishings are soft, and the reverse.

Custom millwork and furnishings give the home its structure. The overall character leans masculine, balanced by rounded forms in side tables and lounge chairs so the eye moves through each room without catching on hard edges. Custom tables finished in a purple and black ombré lacquer line the wide entry. Lighting was layered vertically, with some fixtures set high and others dropped low, so the fixtures work as jewelry for each space while handling the practical demands of a home with this much glass.

Art throughout the residence includes pieces the owner brought from Virginia alongside work by local Sarasota artists, with orange used sparingly in the art and accents as a recurring point of color. The studio also curated the home’s book collection, finishing the residence down to the shelves.
